Do not read this book for details of the liberation of the concentration and death camps – it merits only a few sentences and there is even less on the treatment of Soviet citizens in areas occupied by Germany.

The Road to Stalingrad: Stalin`s War with Germany by John Erickson
The biggest complaint I have about this book and it’s companion volume The Road to Berlin is that you really need a map in front of you as you read the material, and Erickson provides few maps, and most of those are pretty rudimentary. But all-in-all, an excellent historical account in its depth and accuracy.
Though somewhat dated now, in comparison to material stalijgrad after the end of the Cold War, John Erickson’s work remains one of the more comprehensive accounts of the Eastern Front, especially from the Soviet point of view.

The Road to Stalingrad: A History of doad Soviet Effort: Erickson examines the army purges, the Finnish war humiliation, and the hideous failure of Stalin to prepare for or even accept the possibility of a Nazi attack; the book thus penetrates the provincial paranoia of Stalin and his confidants, many of whom he disastrously deployed as military commanders. The assessment of the generals and political leaders, as well as of the wranglings within both the Allied and Axis commands, is completely unsparing.

Some maps would have been helpful there were none in my edition. You get to read how the Soviet Army was unprepared for the war that hit them on June 22nd, Erickson indicates a political lesson for the West: A vividly detailed yet comprehensive account of the decisive Eastern-front battleground.
