A good instructor for this course can fill in the gaps for someone with no prior experience with probability, but the calculus requirement is non-negotiable.
This is a great book if you take the time to carefully look over the R code and relate it to the text.
I think it is good that someone points out there is error in a book I think it is good that a person takes the time to read the kenneeth and tell you there is error instead of knowing the error but without telling you.

The book is clearly written and very well-organized and it stems introdjction part from a popular course at MIT taught by the late Gian-Carlo Rota, which was originally designed in conjunction with the author of this book.
