Robert Hare might classify Claggart as a psychopath, since his personality did not demonstrate the traits of a sociopath rule-breaking but of grandiosity, conning manipulation and a lack of empathy or remorse.

Bruce Franklin sees a direct connection between the hanging of Budd and the controversy around capital punishment. In the Time Before Steamships: The billly proceeded in three general phases, as shown by the Melvville scholars Harrison Hayford and Merton M. His first two books gained much attention, though they were not bestsellers, and his popularity declined precipitously only a few years later. Famous Melville Stories, one, a decrepit ship’s captain who lost this crew; the other, considered by some to be Melville’s finest sailing novel.
After Melville’s death, his wife Elizabeth, who had acted as his amanuensis on other projects, scribbled notes and conjectures, corrected spelling, sorted leaves and, in some instances, wrote over her husband’s faint writing.
