There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Part two lays out the specifics for how to do strategic planning. Some of the worst churches in the world are the largest and wealthiest, and we can’t have it both ways. I’m open to corrections if I’ve erred here.

Review of Malphurs, “Advanced Strategic Planning” text. What are our core values? It will certainly address the question most pastors want to know: Great book that has the bones of what it means to cast vision and lead your church. A better way would be to read Simple Church instead.
But unfortunately, any leader can follow Malphurs process and likely generate some excitement and direction which they may use to produce some measure of productivity, but as this writer mentions and Barna among others assert, this is not the way in which God had historically lead his church.
The bulk of this paper will summarize the desired purpose for Malphurs text and will reflect that while he accomplishes his purpose of detailing the process of what he calls Strategic Planning, he may have in fact attempted to detail so much of the process that he loses the inspirational and unique way in which many leadership experts believe God has called and led the leaders of the people of God through Scripture and history.
While he includes Scripture references in much of what he writes, Malphurs is a pragmatist overall, those in the Reformed tradition who caution churches on such things will find much to dislike in this book.
Capitol Hill Baptist is an elder-led Southern Baptist church that is still quite congregational in its membership and budgeting decisions, for example. Personal Challenges 6 Ibid. Now in its second edition, this practical resource offers – a nine-step strztegic thinking and acting model – useful ideas for developing a strategy – diagrams to help illustrate Why Do You Pray?
I will recommend it plxnning other pastors and seminary professors I know. While Malphurs devotes the last portion of the book to the “setting” of the church, including its building and grounds– and how to run a capital campaign to finance construction– he warns readers up front that a plan to build a building without the greater focus on mission, vision, and strategy to fulfill the mission will likely end in an unused building that reminds members of a previous pastor who is no longer there.

Though for this writer, the greatest weakness of Malphurs text is the subjective definitions and steps he uses. Great resource to have on the shelf, however. Dec 05, Velma Bagby rated it it was amazing. I will certainly use this resource over and over again in my ministry.
The methods in this book are proven to work, having already helped many churches articulate their vision and implement their mission. Paperbackpages.

The author provides a very thorough and textbook like explanation of meeting a church through change. Other editions – View all Advanced Strategic Planning: Yet in Malphurs text he recommends working together with a group of leaders who each decide what they envision for their church, and then these cards are passed to the leader who then incorporates all of the visions into one compelling and challenging vision.
The process phase is divided into nine parts which relate to the: Planbing 07, Marci Sutmiller rated it it was amazing. Practical and foundationally biblical in what to do. This book emphasises on disciple making and clarifies answers to nine fundamental ministry questions. This is partly why I think his later approach to debt is highly dangerous. A 21st-Century Model for Church and Ministry A good way to read this book and execute it’s principles would be to break down advabced process to it’s guiding idea, and strip away the detailed instructions.
Personal obedience, not numbers, will always be the measure God uses to judge his people.
